Sunnahs of waking up

There are a few sunnahs for waking up. They are as follows:

  • Say the waking up dua
  • Say Bismillah (this means ‘In the name of Allah’)

Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “When a person says upon waking up, “In the name of Allah,” a good deed is recorded for them, and when they say it before sleeping, another good deed is recorded.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 8, Hadith 479)

  • Wipe the face with your hands

Narrated by Abdullah bin Zaid, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) would wipe his face three times after waking up.” (Bukhari, Book 4, Hadith 248)

  • Wash your hands

Narrated by Aisha, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) would not sleep at night or take anap during the day without washing his hands three times before and after it.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 4, Hadith 506)

  • Use miswak

Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Miswak is a purification for the mouth and a way to seek Allah’s pleasure.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 7, Hadith 809)

  • Do wudhu

Narrated by Anas bin Malik, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to perform Wudu whenever he got up from sleep.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 4, Hadith 238)

  • Read Salah

Narrated by Anas bin Malik, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) would never miss the Fajr prayer, even if he was travelling.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 11, Hadith 626)

  • Read Quran

Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) would never miss reciting the Quran after waking up.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 2, Hadith 507)
