As Muslim parents and teachers, we all want to help our children grow up loving Islam.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by teaching small Sunnahs that can be practised every day.
These simple habits help children remember Allah, develop good character, and follow the example of Prophet Muhammad ï·º in their daily lives.
The best part? Small Sunnahs done consistently can have a big impact over time.
Sunnah checklist for kids

1. Say Bismillah Before Starting Something
The Prophet ï·º taught us to begin things with the name of Allah.
Children can practise saying:
“Bismillah” (In the name of Allah)
before:
- eating
- drinking
- school work
- reading Quran
- activities and games
It’s a small word, but it’s a beautiful reminder that Allah is part of everything they do.

2. Greet Others With Salaam
Saying:
“Assalamu alaykum”
is one of the simplest Sunnahs to teach — and one of the most rewarding.
Encourage children to greet:
- family members
- friends
- teachers
- visitors
It takes a second, but a warm salaam can genuinely brighten someone’s day.
3. Smile at Others
The Prophet ï·º was known for his smile and he taught that:
“Your smile for your brother is charity.”
It costs nothing, it feels natural for children, and it’s a Sunnah they can practise anywhere, with anyone.
4. Use the Right Hand
The Prophet ï·º encouraged Muslims to use the right hand for eating and drinking.
Children can practise:
- eating with their right hand
- drinking with their right hand
- giving things with their right hand
Small habits like these quietly build awareness of the Sunnah in everyday moments.
5. Say Alhamdulillah Often
Teaching children gratitude is an important part of Islamic upbringing.
Encourage them to say:
“Alhamdulillah” (All praise is for Allah)
when:
- they receive something they like
- they finish a meal
- they have a good day
- they notice a blessing
Grateful hearts grow closer to Allah.
6. Help Others
The Prophet ï·º loved helping people and children are naturally kind when that kindness is encouraged.
They can follow this Sunnah by:
- helping parents tidy up
- helping siblings
- sharing toys
- helping friends
Even the smallest act of kindness counts.
7. Make Dua Every Day
One of the most important things children can learn is that they can talk to Allah whenever they want.
Encourage them to make dua:
- before bed
- after salah
- when they feel worried
- when they feel thankful
This is how children begin to build their own relationship with Allah; not just through what they’re taught, but through what they feel.

How to Make Sunnahs Part of Everyday Life
Children learn best through repetition and example.
Try:
✔ practising one Sunnah each week
✔ using a Sunnah checklist
✔ praising effort rather than perfection
✔ modelling the Sunnah yourself
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s helping children slowly fall in love with following the Prophet ï·º.
Final thoughts
Teaching children the Sunnah does not need to be complicated.
Small daily habits such as saying Bismillah, smiling, helping others, and making dua can slowly become part of a child’s character.
And when these habits are practised with love and consistency, they can stay with children for years to come.
May Allah help us raise children who love and follow the beautiful example of Prophet Muhammad ï·º.
