Food is something many of us rarely stop to think about.
A glass of water when we’re thirsty. A warm meal after a long day. Fruit, vegetables, bread and milk that appear on our tables so regularly that we can easily forget what a blessing they are.
Islam teaches us to be grateful for these blessings and one of the simplest ways we can do that is by saying a short dua before eating.
The dua for eating is often one of the first duas Muslim children learn. It is easy to memorise, simple to practise and a beautiful reminder that everything we have comes from Allah.
In this article, you’ll find the dua for eating in Arabic, English and transliteration, along with its meaning, what to do if you forget to say it and some simple ideas for teaching it to children.

What Is the Dua for Eating?
Before eating, Muslims say:
بِسْمِ اللهِ
Bismillah
In the name of Allah.
Although it is only one short phrase, it carries a beautiful meaning.
By saying “Bismillah”, we begin our meal by remembering Allah and thanking Him for the food He has provided (Bukhari, Muslim).

Why Do We Say the Dua Before Eating?
Imagine preparing a meal from scratch.
Someone planted the seeds. Rain fell from the sky. Crops grew. Food was harvested, transported, purchased and cooked.
Behind all of those means is Allah, the One who provided every blessing along the way.
Saying “Bismillah” helps us pause for a moment and remember where our blessings truly come from.
It’s a small habit, but it helps develop gratitude and keeps Allah at the centre of our daily lives.
The Prophet ﷺ Teaching a Child Table Manners
One of the most famous hadith about eating comes from Umar ibn Abi Salamah (رضي الله عنه), who was a young boy being raised in the household of the Prophet ﷺ.
He narrated:
“I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and my hand used to wander around the dish. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me:
‘O young boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand and eat from what is nearest to you.'”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
This hadith is beautiful because it shows the gentle way the Prophet ﷺ taught children.
He didn’t embarrass the child or scold him harshly. Instead, he kindly taught him three simple etiquettes:
- Say the name of Allah before eating
- Eat with your right hand
- Eat from what is nearest to you
More than 1,400 years later, Muslim parents are still teaching their children these same manners.
What If You Forget to Say the Dua Before Eating?
We’re all human and sometimes we forget.
If you begin eating and then remember later, you can say:
بِسْمِ اللهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu
In the name of Allah at its beginning and at its end.
This was taught by the Prophet ﷺ for those who forget to say “Bismillah” before starting their meal.
How to Teach the Dua for Eating to Children
The best way to teach this dua is through consistency rather than formal lessons.
Try saying it together before every meal, even if your child is still too young to repeat the words.
Over time they will begin to recognise the routine and eventually join in.
Some simple ideas include:
- Displaying a dua poster near the dining table
- Using flashcards
- Role-playing meal times with toys
- Encouraging children to lead the dua
- Praising children when they remember independently
Many parents are surprised by how quickly children pick up daily duas when they hear them regularly.
A Small Sunnah That Builds Gratitude
If a child says “Bismillah” before breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, they could remember Allah over one thousand times each year through this one simple Sunnah alone.
That’s the beauty of Islam.
Acts of worship are not limited to the masjid or Ramadan. Even something as ordinary as eating can become an act of worship when it is done with the remembrance of Allah.
Dua After Eating
After finishing a meal, Muslims are encouraged to thank Allah once again.
You should recite this du’a after finishing a meal or drinking:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
Transliteration: Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at’amana wa saqana, wa ja’alana minal muslimin
Translation: Praise be to Allah who has provided us with food and drink and made us among those who submit to Him.
Teaching children both the dua before eating and the dua after eating helps them develop a habit of gratitude from beginning to end.
