How to Build a Weekly Islamic Studies Routine for Kids

Teaching children about Islam doesn’t have to be overwhelming — even if you’re juggling busy lessons, homeschooling duties, or managing a full household. A simple, weekly islamic studies routine can go a long way in helping children connect with their deen and enjoy the learning process.

Whether you’re a Quran teacher, Islamic school educator, or a Muslim parent at home, this guide is for you.

Step 1: Pick Your Weekly Focus Areas

Start by deciding what you want to cover each week. For younger children, we recommend rotating through:

  • One Surah (with translation and a simple tafseer)
  • One pillar or belief (like Salah or Imaan in angels)
  • One du’a or hadith
  • One Islamic story (prophets, companions, or values)

You don’t need to cover everything in one sitting. Just 10–15 minutes a day can make a big difference over time.

Tip: Primary Ilm has ready-made weekly plans and themed worksheets for all of these topics — saving you planning time!

Step 2: Choose Specific Days for Topics

Give your week structure by assigning each topic to a day. Here’s an example:

  • Monday: Surah and translation
  • Tuesday: Du’a with a colouring page
  • Wednesday: Prophet story with a craft or reading
  • Thursday: Pillar of Islam activity
  • Friday: Hadith reflection and discussion

This builds a comforting rhythm and keeps learning manageable and fun.

Step 3: Use Visuals, Colouring, and Interactive Sheets

Children learn best when they can see, colour, match, and interact with what they’re studying. Use worksheets that include:

  • Cut-and-stick activities
  • Wordsearches and quizzes
  • Matching Arabic to English
  • Colour-in story pages

Not sure where to start? Inside the Primary Ilm membership, you’ll find 1000s of worksheets designed just for Muslim children — from Surah packs to salah flashcards.

Step 4: Add Craft Time (Even Just Once a Week!)

Crafts help reinforce learning. You can make a mini-booklet, foldable du’a cards, or a Prophet story mobile. These also make beautiful keepsakes and visual reminders at home or in class.

All of Primary Ilm’s crafts come with templates and teacher instructions — no stress needed.

Step 5: Keep Your Islamic Studies Routine Consistent, Not Complicated

Don’t worry if you miss a day. The goal is to stay consistent over the long term, not to be perfect every week. Even 2–3 Islamic activities a week can build deep understanding and love for Islam in children.
