Ayatul Kursi is verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah.
Ayatul Kursi Translation in English
A simple English meaning of Ayatul Kursi is:
Allah—there is no one worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him. No one can intercede except with His permission. He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and no one can grasp anything of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.
The verse is centred entirely around Allah’s greatness, knowledge and power.
For younger children, you can make the meaning even simpler:
Ayatul Kursi teaches us how great Allah is. He knows everything, He never gets tired and everything belongs to Him.
Ayatul Kursi Transliteration
Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih. Ya’lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum. Wa la yuhituna bi shay’im-min ‘ilmihi illa bima sha’. Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma. Wa Huwal-‘Aliyyul-‘Adheem.
Transliteration can be a useful support while children are learning, but it shouldn’t replace learning correct Arabic pronunciation from a knowledgeable teacher.
What Does Ayatul Kursi Mean?
Ayatul Kursi means “The Verse of the throne.”
Although it is only one ayah, it teaches children several important things about Allah.
Allah alone deserves worship.
The verse begins by telling us that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah.
Allah is Al-Hayy (the Ever-Living.)
Allah has always existed and will always exist.
Allah is Al-Qayyum (the Sustainer).
Everything depends upon Allah, while Allah depends upon no one.
Allah never sleeps.
People become tired. We need rest and sleep every day.
Allah does not.
For children, this is a wonderfully simple way of understanding the difference between the Creator and His creation.
Everything belongs to Allah.
Everything in the heavens and everything on earth belongs to Him.
Allah knows everything.
Nothing is hidden from Allah. He knows what has happened, what is happening and what will happen.
Looking after creation does not tire Allah.
The heavens and earth are enormous, yet preserving them causes Allah no tiredness at all.
You could therefore summarise Ayatul Kursi for a child with one sentence:
“Ayatul Kursi reminds us just how great and powerful Allah is.”
It is also described in Sahih Muslim as the greatest verse in the Book of Allah.
Is Ayatul Kursi a Surah?
No.
Ayatul Kursi is not a Surah.
It is one verse from Surah Al-Baqarah, specifically verse 2:255.
Children can sometimes become confused about this because Ayatul Kursi is often taught and recited on its own.
A simple way to explain it is:
A Surah is a chapter of the Qur’an. An ayah is a verse inside a Surah. Ayatul Kursi is one ayah inside Surah Al-Baqarah.
How to Teach Ayatul Kursi to Children
You don’t need to teach the Arabic, transliteration and complete English translation all at once.
Start small.
Break it into sections
Ayatul Kursi is quite long compared with the short Surahs children often memorise first.
Learn a small section at a time and revise previous sections before adding more.
Listen regularly
Let your child listen to clear Qur’an recitation while following the Arabic text.
Hearing the same verse regularly makes the words much more familiar.
Teach the meaning alongside the Arabic
Rather than waiting until your child has memorised everything, introduce simple meanings as you go.
You could ask:
Who alone deserves worship?
Allah.
Does Allah ever sleep?
No.
Who owns everything?
Allah.
Does Allah know everything?
Yes.
These tiny questions help children connect the Arabic they are memorising with what the verse is actually teaching them.
Make it part of their routine
Ayatul Kursi can also become part of a child’s bedtime routine.
A well-known authentic narration reports that reciting Ayatul Kursi before sleeping is connected with protection from Allah through the night, with Shaytan unable to approach until morning.
So instead of Ayatul Kursi becoming something a child memorises once and then forgets, it can become something they regularly recite.
